Standard & feedstock

Carbon standard ? The carbon standard chosen will affect the calculation, as each standard uses slightly different calculation methods and default values.

Feedstock type ? Selecting a feedstock type provides suggested values for feedstock moisture content and biochar carbon content.

Feedstock tonnage (t/yr) ? The amount of feedstock that will be converted into biochar via pyrolysis.

Moisture incoming ? The moisture content of the feedstock at the point of harvest, before processing.

Moisture to pyrolyser ? The moisture content of the feedstock when inserted into the pyrolyser. If unsure, use the default value of 0.15.

Pyrolysis & production

Pyrolysis unit ? This will affect the conversion rate from feedstock to biochar.

Pyrolysis process ? This changes the suggested carbon content used in calculations.

Temperature ? Used in some methodologies to calculate the permanence of biochar.

H:C ratio of biochar ? Used in some methodologies to calculate the permanence of biochar.

Carbon content ? A critical characteristic of biochar used to determine carbon sequestration.

Conversion rate ? Alters the rate at which dry feedstock is converted into biochar.

Application & project

Soil temperature (°C) ? Used to calculate permanence of biochar for some methodologies.

Project lifetime (yrs)

Permanence override ? Insert a permanence factor here if you have pre-calculated a permanence value and would prefer to use it in place of the calculated value.

Deductions

Project emissions (tCO₂e / t biochar) ? Emissions from plant operations, feedstock processing, and start-up. Deducted per tonne of biochar produced.

Leakage emissions (tCO₂e / t biochar) ? Indirect emissions caused by the project, such as market or activity-shifting leakage from feedstock diversion.

Counterfactual emissions (tCO₂e / t biochar) ? Emissions that would have occurred without the project, e.g. from alternative feedstock disposal. Deducted per tonne of biochar produced.

Carbon stock of vegetation cleared, emitted in each cohort's planting year. Herbaceous cover is about 1 tCO₂e/ha fully cleared and usually de minimis; woody scrub can be tens of tCO₂e/ha.

Methodology & project

Standard / methodology ?Sets the whole quantification structure: the emission reduction formula, whether a Downward Adjustment Factor applies, the Hawthorne index, upstream emission factors, leakage treatment and the fossil fuel switch rules. Suggested emission factors update with your choice. Gold Standard AWMS is assessed for eligibility but is not quantified here: its baseline is manure methane, a different calculation from fuel combustion.

Project length ?Years over which emission reductions are quantified, up to 21. Gold Standard methodologies use five-year crediting periods with baseline reassessment at renewal, which this early-stage estimate does not model.

Country of project ?Sets the suggested fNRB from CDM TOOL33 v3.0 and, for Gold Standard methodologies, the default DAF. If your country is not listed, choose a regional value or use the overrides below.

Number of stove types ?Up to four project device types can be modelled. Each displaces one baseline device type.

Adjustment factors

fNRB override ?Leave blank to use the national default for the country selected above. Enter a value to override, for example a sub-national MoFuSS figure.

DAF override ?Gold Standard methodologies only. Leave blank to use the country default for the 2026-2030 application period. Where no country value exists the 1.25% floor applies.

Hawthorne override ?Gold Standard SMEC and RECH only. The default 0.90 applies where usage comes from manual survey campaigns. Enter 1.0 if you will use continuous stove use monitors or qualify for the digital MRV exemption. MECD is exempt; VM0050 has no Hawthorne factor.

Usage rate scenario ?The share of each batch of devices still in regular use, by device age. Conservative declines from 100% to 80% by year five. Optimistic holds 100%, which is easiest to evidence with continuous stove use monitors.

Commissioning timing ?When during its commissioning year each annual batch enters service. Mid-year gives each batch half a year of operation in the year it is commissioned and full years thereafter - the realistic assumption where devices are distributed steadily through the year. Start of year credits a full first year.

Other project emissions ?A conservative uplift on project energy emissions, standing in for VM0050 Equation 9 items such as fuel transport and production. Under Gold Standard these are already covered by upstream factors and the embodied deduction, so Excluded is usually right.

Renewable biomass leakage ?VM0050 only. Leakage from a dedicated renewable biomass supply, per CDM TOOL16, in tCO2e over the project. Zero for projects without dedicated plantations or diverted residues. Other VM0050 leakage is already covered by the 0.95 factor.
